PANOS KLEFTIKO
GREEK TAVERNA
Kleftiko refers to the Klefts, bands of roaming Greek freedom fighters, who lived and fought in the mountains of Greece during the war of independence in 1821. These men liberated Hellas from the 400 year long Ottoman occupation. This traditional Greek "taverna" was established in their memory and stands as a tribute to their fortitude.

The Klefts' determination also symbolizes the deep love they had for their country, their land. A similar kind of love inspired Panos Marinos to establish the quaint cafe which is Kleftiko and to create the kind of home grown food that is a s delicious as it is traditional, as unique as it is authentic. The range of cuisine offered here truly represents the rich Greek palate as well as Panos' deft culinary skills. It is characteristic of a feast one would be offered in the gracious Greek home. An though tasty in their own right, one will not find here souvlakia or gyros; these are the Greek equivalent of fast food. Panos Kleftiko only offers a distinctive menu of fresh flavors from arid Peloponnesean seaports to craggy mountain villages, old recipes one might find on any Greek's table, but not in any Greek restaurant.

To compliment this rich and varied menu is an equally fine list of pleasing Greek wines. Familiar to locals and natives, these wines will surprise and delight, and their cost is as agreeable as their taste.

The Greek cuisine is completed by a tasty assortment of Greek pastries. And a zesty cup of Greek coffee (a leftover from the Ottoman occupation) rounds off a dining experience you will relish.

The flavor of the atmosphere is as appealing as the cuisine. Tucked away on 5th Street, at the base of Queen Anne Hill, Panos Kleftiko is a short walk to the Seattle Center. The ambiance is richly cozy, its decor lovingly designed and created by Panos and his faithful friends. And though different in style, the experience of dining there is reminiscent of Cafe Belle Aurore, where Humphrey Bogart kissed Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca. Helping to create the warm atmosphere is the excellent service provided by Michelle, a long time associate of Panos. She is knowledgeable and genuine and one always feels well-greeted and taken care of by her.

All in all Panos Kleftiko is a "sure bet" and a "great find". As evinced by a loyal clientele, and is favorite of the Seattle Greek community. In fact, you will find proprietors of other Greek restaurants frequenting Panos Kleftiko to enjoy the cuisine as well as the camaraderie. It is one of Seattle's best kept, though increasingly renowned, secrets.
